OPC’s function for process visualisations can be compared to the function of printer drivers for word processors – a standardised method for data exchange with the environment.

OPC standardises the exchange of data between programmes. Thus, OPC does not compete with field bus standards like Profibus, CAN or LON. It is quite the contrary: OPC can be successfully combined with these bus systems.

The OPC standard is internationally maintained and further developed by the OPC Foundation. More than 200 companies from the industry belong to this organisation.

VISCOM Visual Communications is member of the OPC Foundation since 1998. VISCOM uses OPC as the preferred interface for the connection of controls to the products VIScontrol and IIP Industrial Internet Platform. Furthermore, VISCOM also develops customer-specific OPC servers.
